WHAT CAN AND CANNOT
GO IN A DUMPSTER

You can put most household items, furniture, appliances, yard waste, and demolished construction debris in a dumpster. You cannot put in chemical products, motor oil, pressure-treated wood, or tires. At Dumpsters Wiz, if it is not on the prohibited list, we take it.

Introduction

If you have ever rented a dumpster or looked into junk removal services, chances are you have asked: what can and cannot go in a dumpster? It is one of the most common questions our team at Dumpsters Wiz hears — and for good reason. Tossing the wrong item can lead to extra charges, environmental violations, or safety hazards that could have been easily avoided.

The good news is that Dumpsters Wiz accepts a wide range of materials — far more than you might expect. From full home cleanouts and kitchen renovations to storm damage cleanups and demolition projects across Brevard County, Florida, our dumpster rental and junk removal services are built to handle it all. This guide breaks down exactly what goes in, what stays out, and why — so you can fill your dumpster with confidence.

✅ What CAN Go in a Dumpster

At Dumpsters Wiz, our rule is simple: if it is not prohibited, it is welcome. Here is a full breakdown of what you can load into our dumpsters.

🏠 HOUSEHOLD GOODS & GENERAL JUNK

General household clutter goes in without a problem — boxes, clothing, toys, kitchenware, and everyday items. Doing a full home cleanout in Brevard? Our dumpsters are sized to handle it all in one rental.

🛋️ Furniture

 All common furniture is accepted
✓ Sofas, recliners, bed frames, mattresses, dining tables, chairs, nightstands, bookshelves, dressers, and wardrobes.

🔧 Appliances — Most Are Accepted

Most large appliances are perfectly fine to toss in:

✓  Washers and dryers

✓  Dishwashers, stoves, and ovens

✓. Microwaves and small kitchen appliances

⚠️ Important: Refrigerators and air conditioning units are only allowed after all Freon and refrigerant fluids have been removed by a licensed HVAC contractor.

🌿 Yard Waste

Yard Waste — Accepted with One Key Rule

Yard waste such as tree limbs, shrubs, leaves, and grass clippings is accepted, provided it is placed in a separate, dedicated dumpster. Mixing yard waste with household goods or construction debris is not permitted. For projects requiring both, Dumpsters Wiz offers the flexibility of multiple rentals — coordinated easily with a single call to our team.

🏗️ Storm Damage & Demolished Construction Debris

This is where Dumpsters Wiz really stands out for Brevard County customers. We gladly accept:

Demolished drywall, wood framing, flooring & ceiling materials
Storm-damaged roofing, fencing, and structural materials
Construction and remodeling waste
Damaged cabinetry, doors, windows, and fixtures
📌  Note: Storm debris cannot be mixed with recyclable yard debris such as tree limbs. Keep them in separate dumpsters.

💨 Completely Empty Aerosol Cans

Only completely empty aerosol cans are accepted. Even a partially-full can is considered hazardous and must be disposed of separately. When in doubt, leave it out.

🚫 What CANNOT Go in a Dumpster: Prohibited Items

Certain items are strictly off-limits — not to make things difficult, but because improper disposal creates real risks for public health, the environment, and our crew. Here is what is prohibited in every Dumpsters Wiz rental:

Chemical Products and Hazardous Materials

Any product labeled with the words pesticide, fertilizer, poison, acid, danger, caustic, or flammable is classified as hazardous and cannot go in a dumpster. This includes household cleaning chemicals, pool supplies, and industrial products. These items require disposal at a licensed hazardous waste facility.

Motor Oil and Liquid Fuels

Motor oil, gasoline, diesel, and petroleum-based liquids are strictly prohibited. These substances can leach into the ground and contaminate water supplies. Many auto shops and recycling centers across Brevard County accept used motor oil for free — check with your local municipality for drop-off locations.

Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure-treated lumber is infused with chemical preservatives that are toxic when burned or landfilled without proper handling. It may look like regular wood, but it requires special disposal. Look for a greenish tint or stamped markings on the lumber as identifiers.

Tires

Tires are banned from standard landfills across Florida and cannot be placed in a rental dumpster. They trap methane gas and create pest hazards. Tire retailers and Brevard County recycling events typically accept used tires for a small fee.

Batteries

Car batteries, lithium-ion batteries from phones and laptops, and standard household batteries are all prohibited. Many retailers including Best Buy, Home Depot, and AutoZone offer free battery recycling programs.

Paint, Lacquers, and Adhesives

Liquid paint cans, spray paint, lacquers, stains, and strong adhesives are not accepted. Dried and completely empty paint cans may be acceptable — but if any liquid remains, they must be disposed of separately.

Propane Tanks and Gas Cylinders

Propane tanks — even those you believe are empty — are explosive hazards and are strictly prohibited. Most propane suppliers will accept empty tanks for exchange or recycling.

Food Waste

Food scraps and organic kitchen waste are not accepted in dumpster rentals. They attract pests and create sanitation issues. Use your regular trash service or a local composting program for food waste.

Clean layout with bold warning labels and neutral industrial background.

Weight and Fill Line Limits

Every dumpster rental comes with two firm limits — both enforced for safety and legal compliance:

  • Maximum weight: 4 tons (8,000 lbs) per dumpster
  • Maximum fill: Materials must not exceed the marked fill line on the dumpster

Heavy materials like concrete, brick, asphalt, sand, and dirt are particularly tricky — they weigh far more than they look. Small amounts mixed with renovation debris may be acceptable, but if your project is heavy on these materials, contact us so we can help you choose the right dumpster size and avoid overweight fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can and cannot go in a dumpster?

You can put most household goods, furniture, appliances (washers, dryers, stoves), electronics, yard waste, and demolished construction debris in a dumpster. You cannot put in chemical products, motor oil, pressure-treated wood, tires, batteries, paint, propane tanks, or food waste. At Dumpsters Wiz, if it is not on the prohibited list, we take it.

Every Dumpsters Wiz dumpster has a maximum weight limit of 4 tons, which equals 8,000 lbs. You also must not fill above the marked fill line on the dumpster. Exceeding either limit will result in additional charges. Heavy materials like concrete, brick, sand, and dirt add up faster than you might expect — call us if you are unsure.

When in doubt, give us a call before your rental! Our team at Dumpsters Wiz is happy to walk you through what can and cannot go in a dumpster so there are no surprise fees or issues on pickup day. It only takes a minute and saves a lot of headache.

It depends on the type of waste. General household goods, furniture, appliances, electronics, and construction debris can all be mixed in the same dumpster. However, yard waste must always go in its own dedicated dumpster. Storm debris also cannot be mixed with recyclable yard debris like tree limbs. If you have multiple waste types, contact us — we can help you plan the right combination of rentals.
